Support Alison Cook Beatty Dance’s 2016 Season!

Description

Thank you for checking out the Alison Cook Beatty Dance crowdfunding campaign! We are thrilled to be entering our fourth year as a company, and have an exciting year of dance planned that needs your support.

We are a NYC-based contemporary dance company founded in 2012 and have been hard at work ever since. The company comprises a group of professionally trained dancers from across the world, as well as collaborating musicians and visual artists. We need your help and support with upcoming winter and spring projects, in addition to ensuring our company is strengthening our foundation.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION:

Martha Graham Studio Theater Performance

We are self-producing our own show at the Martha Graham Studio Theater with the Bleecker String Quartet. The company will be performing three pieces on the program with two NYC premieres.  Expenses include the theater rental, studio rehearsal space leading up to the performance, paying the dancers and musicians, costume design and costume rental, event production costs (e.g. flyers, programs, insurance,), and several other expenses.

The Putney Residency

Artistic Director Alison Cook-Beatty will be traveling up to Putney, VT for a week to teach masterclasses to the high-school students at The Putney School. She will be bringing one or more company members with her to assist in teaching, and to perform a lecture demonstration with video slide. Expenses include travel and lodging expenses and paying the dancers.

92nd Street Y Performance

We are self-producing 2 performances at the 92nd Street Y in New York in March 2016. It will be an evening performance of both dance and music.  Expenses include the theater rental, studio rehearsal space leading up to the performance, paying the dancers and musicians, costume design and costume rental, event production costs (e.g. flyers, programs, insurance,), and several other expenses.

Community Outreach

We are in correspondence with The Ronald McDonald Home and building relationships to go perform for the children and families with musicians we work with often.  We were scheduled to go this past summer but The Pope beat us to it.   In June 2016, our company continued its focus on the healing power of dance by returning to the Mary Manning Walsh Center to perform, demonstrate, teach, and interact with the 100+ residents of the rehabilitation and elder care center. In addition to our dancers, we bring several talented musicians with us in order to provide live music and dancing for the residents. To see the faces in the room light-up with joy when they start dancing themselves is so special, and direct evidence that our company needs to continue to live out its mission and bring dance to all communities. We recently partnered with SubmissioN Impossible, a non-profit organization that provides inner-city youth a path to success through mentoring, martial arts and service to the community. We organized a program in which the children took part in a day-in-the-life of a professional dancer, exposing them to dance, music, and the arts. We see the impact these events have first-hand, and have more community-outreach projects in mind for 2016!

EXPENSES

Bringing a dance to the public is a worthwhile but expensive endeavor. A typical dance with six dancers includes over 50 rehearsal hours per dancer (300 total rehearsal hours, upwards of $1500), studio rental ($20-$40/hr), theater rental (ranging from $1,500 – $10,000), costumes ($500-$1,000), insurance and liability coverage ($250), promotion ($200), music rights ($100-$200), lighting and technical staff, photographer, and required theater personnel, and most importantly payment to the hard-working dancers and collaborating artists- which can cost thousands of dollars per performance. Accounting for all expenses, a typical performance at a theater easily exceeds $5,000. We have 2 performances approaching, and several others confirmed (check out www.alisoncookbeattydance.org/events)

Additional expenses include a budget of $1,000 for community outreach efforts in 2016, vital to our company’s mission. Lastly, and vitally important at this time, our company is working hard to build a strong foundation for the future, including the necessary accounting, legal, and business expenses that running a company entails.

HOW YOU CAN HELP!
