Nancy and I met over twenty year ago at our first restaurant jobs. Since then, we have remained in touch and have always talked about one day coming together and opening a place of our own where we can showcase both Mexican cuisine and Thai desserts.
My passion for cooking started as a young child living in Mexico. At age seven I was responsible for helping my mother make all of the homemade salsas for the family dishes. As an adult cooking Mexican food has become the best way for me to express love and care.
Nancy started making Krok as a way to share her mom’s delicious coconut custard cake recipe with the San Francisco Bay area community. She began cooking this dessert at the Wat Mongkolrotanaram Buddhist Thai Temple in Berkeley, California. Today, people still enjoy this dessert that is traditionally cook to order every Sunday at the Thai Temple brunch.
Our goal at Cafe Califas is to provide the Oakland community a neighborhood place owned and operated by local California woman. We have lived and worked in Oakland over the last twenty year and are exited to share our Mexican cooking and Thai sweets.
The name Califas is a nickname for California used in Southern California and Mexico City. We used the name because we both identify with the diverse California culture and fresh cuisine.
It will help us purchase some additional equipment and improve the design of the location. This loan will allow us to have peace of mind financially so that we can focus on giving our customer an amazing food experience.
